Her research interests also include biodiversity conservation, natural resource management, smallholder farmers, and protected areas. He writes on the economic value of education, on the underlying political economy of educational policy, and on the financing and resource allocation aspects of educational production. Much of his work is comparative and international and investigates the impact of global economic and social change on the way educational systems are organized. Examples of this are his books,<em> Faded Dreams</em> (1994),<em> Sustaining the New Economy: Work, Family and Community in the Information Age</em> (2000),<em> The Charter School Dust-Up</em> (co-author, 2005<em>);</em><em> Cuba's Academic Advantage</em>(2007), and<em> Vouchers and Public School Performance (</em>2007<em>).</em> He and colleagues from South Africa and Botswana have recently published an innovative study on primary schooling in southern Africa,<em> The Low Achievement Trap</em>. and he is currently completing a book on higher educational change in the large developing countries-Brazil, Russia, India, and China-known as the BRICs. GeoAdaptive specializes in this strategic spatial planning and supporting technologies. Their work uses spatial analysis and scenario methods to help clients visualize alternative futures and their consequences. GeoAdaptive deploys a trans-disciplinary approach which engages key stakeholders and integrates best available science using geographic information systems.</p> <p>Dr. Vargas is a principal partner at GeoAdaptive and a Lecturer and Research Scientist at the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is an urban designer and landscape planner and is responsible for management and project operations at GeoAdaptive. Dr. Vargas specializes in a variety of project types, including master planning, scenario planning, simulation modeling, visual assessment, resort planning, and open space planning. At MIT he serves as a research scientist and manages projects on rapid urban and rural change, climate change, and ecosystem conservation. He has served as the Assistant Director of MIT-USGS Science Impact Collaborative and as a Lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and the University of Costa Rica. In 2011, Menke received and M.S. in Earth Systems from Stanford, with a concentration on the political economy of sustainable development and conservation. Prior her work with INOGO, Arnold worked for <a href="http://www.prizecapital.net/Prize_Capital/Home/Home.html">Prize Capital</a>, a company that develops innovative financial mechanisms to address environmental challenges. While at Prize Capital, Mest engaged in the initial research and development efforts that eventually led to the <a href="http://carbon.xprize.org/">NRG Cosia Carbon X Prize</a>.  She also led efforts focused on urban farming, REDD+, and private conservation strategy. At Prize Capital Mest was part of a multi-year effort to engage with stakeholders to address increasing challenges in the Osa and Golfito region of Costa Rica, an effort that ultimately led to the creation of INOGO.</p> <p>Arnold began her work in Costa Rica with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), serving as the Costa Rica sole in-country representative while pursing a master's degree. NRDC’s focus on investigating strategies to make Costa Rica fossil fuel free in the energy and transportation sectors caused her to frequently interact directly with high-level government officials.</p> <p>Arnold initially built a foundation in cmmunity development and conservation working with small NGOs in Greece and Mexico, after which she worked in Paris at France Nature Environment, a network of over 3,000 organizations lobbying to influence French, European and international environmental policy. She then worked in Washington, DC at the Earth Policy Institute, led by Worldwatch Institute founder Lester Brown, where she contributed to Brown's book Plan B 2.0 and authored an Eco-Economy Update on the negative impacts of bottled water on the environment.</p> <p>Ms. Arnold first discovered her passion for for-profit environmental ventures while working at Canopy Development, a start-up company exploring a sustainable tourism-based model for conservation and economic development. At Canopy Development she ran the internal sustainability efforts of the company, as well as serving as project manager for the first Canopy Development branded resort.</p> <p>Ms. Arnold holds two masters degrees: one in Natural Resources and Sustainable Development from the United Nations Mandated University for Peace in San Jose, Costa Rica and another in International Affairs from American University in Washington, DC. For the past 20 years her work has also extended to the interface between human, wildlife and ecosystem health- most recently including planetary health. She received her doctorate of public health in community health and epidemiology in 1988. Her thesis focused on factors affecting the uptake of family planning in Niamey, Niger. Subsequently, she worked as senior advisor to the Kenya Ministry of Health on a USAID-funded family planning information system project. Starting in 1991, she served as Director of Research and Evaluation at JHPIEGO, a Johns Hopkins University affiliate, focusing initially on family planning training and then, post-Cairo, on broader women’s reproductive health issues. In 1996 she founded her own research and evaluation organization, EARTH Inc., to provide technical assistance to broader ecosystem health initiatives. In this capacity, she has worked closely with numerous conservation organizations (e.g. Conservation through Public Health, Wildlife Conservation Society, Jane Goodall Institute) as a public health and/or research and evaluation advisor. She continues to provide similar technical assistance to NGOs aiming to strengthen human health and environmental conservation linkages. Between 2011-2018, Dr. Gaffikin provided support to INOGO as their health and metrics advisor, undertaking a comprehensive health assessment of the region’s health status, needs and resources and[LG1] advising on strategic planning and results measurement.
